California air board chief Mary Nichols says she would accept the job of EPA administrator if offered the post under a Biden administration, and believes her experience with pioneering climate change and air programs in the Golden State could shape future national policies, especially if Democrats take control of Congress after the Nov. 3 elections.

ICCT: How low-carbon fuel standards can support transport electrification

Electrification of the passenger vehicle fleet is an essential component of transport decarbonization, but the typically higher up-front cost of electric vehicles (EVs) and concerns about sufficient charging infrastructure can hinder widespread adoption.

Commentary: New York must adopt technology-neutral fuel standard

Last year, New York passed into law the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, and it immediately became the country's most ambitious climate policy. The CLCPA requires New York's overall economy to be net-zero carbon by 2050.

The state's transportation sector, which currently is responsible for 46 percent of its total energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, must undergo rapid and comprehensive decarbonization on an unprecedented scale. If New York is to successfully reach this target, then it is imperative that we adopt a technology-neutral Low Carbon Fuel Standard.

Clean Fuels NY Coalition Submits Letter to Governor Cuomo Urging for a Low Carbon Fuel Standard

Dear Governor Cuomo,

On behalf of the Clean Fuels NY Coalition, we write to congratulate you on your robust 2020 State of the State address, beginning with addressing climate change. We applaud your four-part initiative to accelerate investment in electric vehicles, charging stations and mass transit.

As you know, the transportation sector is the largest contributor to New York’s greenhouse gas emissions. We need big solutions to modernize such a large sector, and we are pleased the State is taking measures to electrify our bus fleets and expand charging opportunities.

Here’s How Clean Energy Can Fuel NY

The transportation sector is the largest contributor to climate pollution nationally and in New York State. But there are effective solutions that our policymakers can adopt right now to address this, including a low-carbon fuel standard (LCFS). This is why NRDC is joining the Clean Fuels NY Coalition—to help push for an LCFS in New York this legislative session.
